Supporting the ‘Great British Spring Clean with JLL

We treat our commitment to delivering social value as a business objective seriously. It supports our purpose of ‘Creating Better Places’ and also gets us into the local community where otherwise we may not have the opportunity. Often these activities are also a great way to collaborate with clients and other industry operators, where we can all pull together with a common value.

Yesterday, we participated in a litter pick at Fairfield Park, Kingston, as part of the ‘Great British Spring Clean’ (17th March – 2nd April 2023) which our client JLL are supporting this year. Working with the ESG team on the Abrdn account at JLL, we joined forces with fellow cleaning firms Andron & Churchill, creating a taskforce over a number of days this week, setting about clearing litter from the Kingston park. Our day yesterday achieved a total of 12 bags or rubbish collected amongst 9 of us. Thanks to our contract managers (Hugo, Fabio, Alan, Jose), Anna Fiona, and Adam West for helping us. We were assisted by some Facilities Managers from JLL and a member of Rotunda’s security team.


This kind of activity helped us increase our social value contribution by 48% last year, something we intend to continue to grow in our new financial year.

A charity close to our hearts

Today marks the annual World Down Syndrome Day. We are so proud to be patrons of @Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT), who deliver the Charlton Upbeats programme for young people and adults with Down’s syndrome.

The Charlton Upbeats started in 2008 and aims to allow people with Down’s syndrome to reach their full potential by providing them with opportunities to learn and develop basic skills in football, offering a clear pathway for young people into senior competitive football. As well as providing weekly football sessions, the Upbeats regularly engage in other activities, including days out and overnight residential trips. Over 100 young people are registered with the Upbeats programme.

The CACT Upbeats 2022 report shows us that:
• 96% feel happier since attending the Charlton Upbeats
• 98% improved their physical wellbeing
• 100% improved their social skills and made new friends and improved their emotional wellbeing
• 100% recommend Charlton Upbeats to other families

Join us as we support CACT’s Annual Upbeats Walk on Saturday 29th April, a 9-mile walk between the CAFC Training Ground and The Valley in aid of the Upbeats Down’s Syndrome team.

Congratulations on 30 years of service Danny

Huge congratulations to our Contract Manager, Danny Addo Boadu, for 30 years of service. We can’t thank you enough and are truly grateful for the hard work and dedication you have provided us over the years.

Danny began working for us a cleaning operative in 1992 and has since progressed to a Contract Manager. As a family run business, we know that we succeed when we develop meaningful, long-lasting relationships. Danny is a prime example of how we promote from within and have always been dedicated to our colleagues and their development.

We spoke to our Account Director and Danny’s manager, Michael Chinakwe; “Having been in the business coming up to 6 years personally, I have worked with Danny closely for the last 3 years. Danny epitomises the Regular Cleaning values. He is always willing to help and be hands on to ensure the best standards are delivered for our clients. Danny loves to remind me that he has been in the company since before I was born! He also likes to reminisce on the fact he had a full set of hair 30 years ago! I guess it won’t be long until I lose mine!

Working with Danny is like working with someone who you would call a friend and more so family. He has given me sound advice for my future regarding marriage and kids, as well as life experiences in general. We are delighted with this milestone achieved by Danny and as a business we look forward to celebrating more years.”

Our Chair, Pauline Carrigan, says “Danny has been integral to the success of Regular Cleaning over the last thirty years. His passion, drive and commitment are second to none and our business would not be where it is without him. We look forward to Danny’s next chapter as he is playing a key role in the development and growth of our in-house specialist cleaning team!”

We wish him all the best and look forward to seeing Danny remain a core team member for many years to come.

Celebrating International Women’s Day: Senior leadership women in the cleaning sector

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we spoke to our Account Director, Hannah Briffaut, to find out what it’s like to work in a senior leadership position, and where the workforce is predominantly male.

Hannah started her career in facility management and worked her way up within the industry. “My current role allows a more in depth understanding of one of the many facets of being in the FM industry. The role also gives me direct experience of line managing and developing interpersonal and managerial skills.”

We asked her what struggles she had faced in the past, “When I was in my 20’s and was in a senior role, I did find that sometimes my opinions were not taken as seriously. It was a challenge to be heard and respected by people because of my experience and knowledge rather than them making assumptions about the experience I might have because of my age and gender.”

Despite the past, Hannah expressed that “In any industry you will be faced with challenges whether that’s professional or personal when dealing with people but it’s your self-belief, confidence, and resilience that’s key. Developing interpersonal skills that allow you to disagree/agree with people without it becoming confrontational.”

If you’re a woman aspiring to build a career in the cleaning sector, Hannah provides 3 keys to success: “professionalism, resilience, and adaptability. Never doubt yourself and believe in yourself. Trust your instincts and have the confidence in your own ability rather than seconding guessing and overthinking.”

Inspiring people like Hannah, and many of the other women we work with shows the willingness to learn and gain expertise is key to succeeding. It was a pleasure to gain insight and learn more about Hannah’s journey to leadership; we are truly proud to have her on the Regular Cleaning Team. 

In April 2021, our workforce was made up of 53% Male and 47% Female. From 2017 to 2021 we’ve had a roughly equal Male and Female split across all four Gender Pay Gap bandings. This has led to a lower-than-average gender pay gap for female colleagues working for Regular Cleaning in comparison to the UK average. On average female colleagues at Regular Cleaning earn 5.6% less than male colleagues. In 2021 the average for the UK was 7.9%. Our split between male and female and part time and full-time working is also really even. We had 7% more males than females working full time. Our 2022 report will be available on 1st April 2023.

We aren’t just driving equality, raising awareness, and educating our colleagues, but we are also launching new initiatives including a mentoring scheme which we hope will facilitate more diversity in management roles in the future.
